Designing The Best 10 Years
I read the above quote the other day and I immediately flashed back to an 8-week online course I took at the beginning of the new year.
It was run by Darren Hardy, the publisher of “Success” magazine. The course was called “Designing The Best 10 Years of Your Life.” Over an 8-week period, Darren took us from simply writing down our goals, dreams, etc., to creating a personal mission statement, core values, and a functioning business plan – not for our companies – but for ourselves!
This was a thought provoking course and made us all look deep into our very own core – about who we are, what we believe, and what we want to become.
Mission Objective
As I mentioned above, in one of the lessons, we had to create a personal mission statement.
At first I was a bit daunted by this task.
I had seen company mission statements in the past and I had NO CLUE as to how to apply it to myself and my internet business.
I mean, where do you even start?
This will define not only myself in life, but what I stand for as a person in my business.
My own mission statement? Wow…that’s huge!
“Worksheet No. 5 – Mission”
Thanks to Darren’s “Worksheet No. 5″ I found some help.
I wonder if you’ve ever thought of a mission statement in this way before:
“A personal mission statement provides clarity and gives you a sense of purpose. It defines who you are and how you will live. Your mission statement should be able to guide your actions, spell out your overall goals, provide a sense of direction and guide decision making.”
Seems simple right?
Actually it was really simple. I found it amazingly simple actually.
I assume it was a lot easier doing it for myself rather than it would be for an entire corporation.
Let’s see what I was able to come up with shall we?
My Mission Statement
To Live each day knowing that God is by my side, with faith, honesty, Love for others, and standing up for what I believe. I will do this so that my wife, children, family, and friends will know that is not only who I am, but what is important in life.
I will do this by speaking openly about my love for God, and his son, Jesus, and that they will provide what is necessary for me & my business; faith in my abilities to be an outstanding marketer and leader in internet marketing; speaking and acting honestly to family, friends, and fellow internet marketers; Love for my fellow brothers & sisters – regardless of color, race, economic status, religion, or beliefs; standing up for what I have written here; being a loving and available husband & father; being a giving philanthropist with my earnings; making a positive difference in peoples lives; continuing to educate myself; and of course – simply having fun!
So…there you go. That’s me and my business in a nutshell – (take it or leave it – wink, wink).
Some Things To Keep In Mind
As time goes by, you mission statement will evolve with you – simply as you evolve.
It is a good thing to look back annually and determine if it still echoes your values, goals, and outcomes.
You will be able to adjust your mission statement to those points that are our values, goals, and outcomes.
What About You?
So now that I’ve opened and told you my mission statement, it’s only fair that I ask you if you have one.
So what is it?
Have you thought of a mission statement for “You, Inc.”?
If not, here is a great starting point to steer you in the right direction.

Linus,
I see you follow the first commandment. You put the Lord first. One of my goals last year was to know the 10 commandments, off the top of my head, should anyone ask. I do need to create a mission statement for myself. You have brought up something that I have never thought about. Writing a statement of how I want to conduct my life and business. Linus that is powerful and so simple. I will start to work on that today. Thanks Linus and God bless.

Cool post Linus,
Your the pro at mindset and mission statements. I agree that the Darren Hardy course is an eye opener. I had no idea what was involved in “goal setting” other than writing some things down.
Great words of wisdom we should all listen to and follow.
Thanks brother,

Bert,
Darren’s course was awesome. You and I are fortunate enough to have taken it.
And it is true – a goal really isn’t a goal until you get it down on paper and can reflect on it to keep yourself in check.

Hey Linus!
I’ve never actually sat down and officially written mine out. It’s up there in my head but I know how much more powerful things are once written down. Thanks for sharing the starting point link…. perhaps while I sit on the beach with my fancy umbrella drink I can officially write it out!

Hey Linus,
Excellent post on a subject most people wouldn’t touch with a ten foot pole. Most people are afraid of a “personal” type subject for the fear that they might “offend” someone. Thanks for stepping up to the challenge.
I have not been though a formal process, such as you describe, so my mission statement is MUCH less elegant that yours. It is simply:
“Do for others the things that you would like others to do for you. Favor correct instead of politically correct. Remember that the Almighty sees and hears everything even when no one else is there. Listen to your inner voice for it is your guardian angel conversing with you.”
It has kept me out of trouble MANY times.
To Your Continued Success,
Bill

Bill,
The mission statement you provided here is a great start man – especially with what you wrote about the Almighty seeing what you do.
I just think that it’s important to have a baseline to go off of, and to establish not only who you are and what you stand for, but to also help brand you!
Thanks for the comment Bill,

Thanks for all that you do. I have a mission statement, but I have to admit that it has been awhile since I have read it. I will get that out now and see how it rings with what I am doing now.
Thanks,
Kathy
