Avoiding The YouTube Slap…(Ouch…that friggin hurt!)

Posted by Linus Ruzicka On May - 19 - 2009

Last week we held a webinar on How to avoid the YouTube slap.

If you weren’t aware, Youtube has cracked down on people that are using their site to market their videos and content.

In some cases, even deleting entire accounts without a message or warning at all.  However, most people get an e-mail saying that they have at least shut down the account.

Either the case, if you are one of the luck few who have NOT been smacked by Youtube, consider yourself lucky.  I fall into that category as of now, but I don’t want to press my luck.  Who knows if Youtube’s listening in on my computer….

So, I wanted to pass along my notes from the webinar, so here they are.

Some of them might seem a bit overdone, but seriously, Youtube is coming down HARD on people.  Imagine losing all of your video links, your subscribers, your friends, and your content.

You can decide which how much of this you want to follow, but don’t tell me that I didn’t warn you.

We really focused on ground rules for 2 different groups – those are are brand new users to Youtube, and those that ALREADY have one or more accounts with YouTube.

1. New Users

  • Create and maintain only one account with Youtube.
  • Never spam or overload your video description, title, or tags with keywords
  • NEVER purchase Youtube views (yes this is a practice with some folks, but not endorsed at all!)
  • Never use software (Tube blaster, Tubinator, etc) to ad friends, make comments, or apply ratings automatically.
  • Never upload duplicate content, even if altered by just a few seconds or credits.
  • Use your channel for content, branding, and other things OTHER than just marketing.
  • Use Youtube for branding only.

2. Users with 1 or More account

  • Shut down all but ONE account, especially if the other accoutns were created with all with the same e-mail address.
  • If the one you’re deleting has the same e-mail address as the one you’re keeping, change the e-mail address on your keeper channel.
  • Consider changing your IP address via your internet provider.  Just call them and ask for a new IP address.  But most people already have an automatically changing IP address if they’re using wireless internet.
  • The same rules apply as for “New Users.”

Now, if you’re ALREADY had the snot slapped out of your account by YouTube…after you’re done cursing them up and down of course…here are some tips to help keep you safe as you’re starting over from scratch:

  • Get a new IP address – refer to my point above
  • Start a new e-mail address for your new account
  • Open one and ONLY 1 account
  • Whichever links you were providing earlier, don’t use the same ones. YouTube keeps a record of your links, e-mail, IP address, name, etc.  Use a site like Tr.im for your links.
  • You can upload your old videos if you’ve saved them, but alter them just a little bit.  Add a credit or title at the begining.
  • If you’re using Traffic Geyser, elect NOT to send videos to YouTube.  You should do this manually to YouTube instead.
  • No more TubeBlaster Pro.
  • Only give value, no sales pitches.

So, there you have it.  The synopsis of the stuff we talked about last week.

HOPEFULLY you’ve not been slapped around, but if you have, I hope some of the information I listed here helps.

Be sure to drop by and ask me if there’s any other questions you have.

In the meantime, of course now that I’ve scared you to death about YouTube, good luck with your video marketing!  I’ve already made the changes I listed above.
