Blog Monetization – Is Your Blog Killing Your Business?

Posted by Linus Ruzicka On February - 4 - 2010

Lets take a look at yourself for a moment.  Why did you start blogging?

Was it just a convenient way to get your content out to the masses?

Were you trying to build a “name” for yourself and do some self branding?

Were you simply trying to make money from a blog?

Many of you started blogging to get more business.

OR…

…Did you start blogging to generate more leads?

Or did you start blogging to build your business?

I’ll be honest with you, whichever the case, it doesn’t matter.  Many of you are actually killing your business with blogging.

It’s very likely that up to this point, all of your blogging efforts have been killing your ability to convert traffic into leads, and therefore your business in the network marketing industry.

See, a blog is supposed to edify you as a leader, a mentor.  It is supposed to brand you as an expert in your given niche.

But many of us have gotten so wrapped up in generating more blog traffic that we’ve forgotten that we need our blogs to build our business.

The Initial Addiction

Admit it, it’s become an addiction for you to increase your blog traffic.

You’re busting out amazing content, you’re giving great advice, you’re helping other people.  You’re traffic is increasing because of this.

You get a thrill out of seeing more comments from your readers.  You love seeing your Alexa score increase.  You love watching your blog traffic growth charts ebb and flow on a daily basis.

But you’re missing a vital piece here.

Did you forget that you have a business first and a blog second?

The traffic is nice, but, the real piece of the puzzle lies in converting that traffic into leads – which is so vital to your business.

The traffic that you have coming to your site either finds the answer they’re looking for or gets the advice they need, and then leave.

Your traffic came and got what they were looking for.  They found your post and read it.  Probably liked it, and that was it.

You’re probably asking, “Wha?  Why didn’t they sign up with me?  My information is ALL OVER my blog.”

Hmmmmm….not so fast slick.

“What’s Your Purpose?”

If you’re new to internet marketing let me fill you.  If you’ve been in for some time, you need to hear it again.  This business is ALL about converting traffic into leads.  And then converting your leads into your business through a generic, self-branding sales funnel.

Well, where does your traffic find that information that will convert them? (Obviously without them really knowing about it – is just happens once they fill out the lead capture form or they sign up with you on a direct link).

Is it in a blatant sales pitch on the home page?  Heck NO!

Is it hidden behind some banner ad?  Maybe.  But how would they know it?

Did you make a special page for it?  Possibly.  But they’re not looking for it.

Your traffic didn’t arrive at your blog looking to sign up with a system or a business or even with you (sorry to bust your ego, but it’s true).  They were looking for some content that you marketed to bring them to your site in the first place.  Once you deliver on the promised content, they got what they were looking for inside.

Your traffic doesn’t see what you’re HOPING they see.  You know you’re blogging to get more business.  You know that you’re looking for new leads and team members.  But that site visitor?  He doesn’t even come close to thinking of that at all.  You need to get the idea in his head!

Location, Location, Location

Getting that “idea” in their head is easier than you think.

The very best place to place that “idea” or suggestion is at the end of that content packed blog post that he just read.  Simply finish each and every single post with a little plug towards hiring you.  Something like this:

“Building your online business alone will often not be enough to bring you success in this industry.  You need a good coach and mentor that can give you practical instruction on how to put everything together.  “Carl” is a leader in online marketing that knows his way around this industry.

Fill out the form below [a lead capture form is placed at the end of the post] to start working with “Carl”.  He will send you some free training materials on how to start marketing online.

See how that gets the idea in their heads?

Your readers visit your site looking for the advice and insight you were marketing – which is GREAT for your blog as far as traffic goes.  But it’s not the ultimate goal.  If you don’t remind them and give yourself a plug that you have something more to offer than just information, they won’t think of buying an affiliate product from you or joining your team.

And that is what is killing your business.  You need to monetize your blog.  Make sure your blog readers know what you do for your business.  You will thank me later.

As I practice what I preach, here is what I have to tell you today:  Since you are looking at Improving your MLM business online, you need someone to show you some realistic strategies and rules that will help brand you and improve your lead generation.  I am an attraction marketing strategist that can help both you and your business – but you need to WANT that success.

Fill out the form below to get my MLM Prospect Formula Newsletter.  I will send you my Free Training on how I can help you learn to market yourself and your business online, as well as a personal phone call from me if you leave your phone number.  Doubt it?  Put your valid number in and find out what happens ;)

    Hey Linus,

You hit the nail on the head with this one! We as network marketers are NOT here to just blog about the days of our lives…Blogging is a part of our business and a business is supposed to make you money.

Provide value, build relationships, and then monetize. That’s the name of the game.

bloging I thought was just for networking to find out about ventures that existed for the convinance of expanding your horizen. there’s money in it too? omg, didn’t have a clue, I’m willing to learn , so teach.

    Exactly Yo!

If you’re not in this for business – then what are you doing? simply hoping that people find your link or undefined banner on your blog.

You need to direct people what to do inside of your blog posts. Now, i’m not saying that people are brainless, but I am saying that if you want to monetize your blog, you need to send people where you want with clear and implicit directions.

Through the training we’ve all had, to see it broken down with providing value, then building those valuable relationships, and then monetizing (instead of the other way around) that is the basics!

    John,

Ah, you know, that’s what I do ;)

  10. Linus Ruzicka says:

    Carlos,

    Thanks brother!

I thought the topic was something to bring up so that people know that it’s “o.k.” to direct people to go certain places. If it causes a stir, then so be it. But this is how you make your money with your blog.

btw – Carl is just short for Carlos ;)

    R.C.,

Thanks for stopping by to comment.

To try and teach in one blog comment – well that’s impossible.

Have you looked at my most recent blog posts and how to start driving traffic to your blog?

The more traffic you get, the more leads you should be able to get. That in turn gets them into your sales funnel, which introduces them to your primary business.

That is where I would suggest starting. If you have more questions, contact me here on the blog.

    Linus,

Now that is how you convert a blog post into leads everyone.

It was just told to you in best way possible, so no excuses.

  14. Hey Linus

    Great article / post.

I have to confess. I am an addict. I love to see how my blog is growing and developing.

Fortunate for me I am ticking all boxes so far.
    Getting my content out there.
    Growing in the SERPs.
    Getting return readers.
    Generating leads.

Thing is I know there is more I can do to offer more value and convert more people from readers to leads to business partners. There will be some changes to my blog in the near future.

Whats more as an added bonus I enjoy blogging. I didn’t think I would like it as much as I do but you get to meet to many great people. Its really cool

    Dwayne

  15. Linus Ruzicka says:

    Bert,

Can I hire you to be my spokesman?

The cool thing is that it is such a simple concept to get what you want in front of people and have them see what you’d like them to see.

It just needs to be casual, flow nicely, and completely non-spamy. If it ever gets to that point, something needs to be change because that it NOT what you want.

    ~ Linus

  16. Linus Ruzicka says:

    Dwayne,

Should we have an intervention and send you to BA (…bloggers anonymous)? ;)

But you are correct – you have to love blogging to do this. I love being able to sit and get my thoughts and ideas down on the internet. This is TRULY a fun way to market.

Through your idea of creating content, returning readers, and getting leads from that, well that just kicks butt!

Some people get that concept and some don’t. It is those people that don’t get it that are STILL struggling and hurting with this strategy.

Thanks for being so open Dwayne.

    ~ Linus

  17. Linus,

Great post! The first blog I had up (before it was hacked), I had no way to capture my visitors info but on my latest one, I made the change.

It’s something that’s so obvious, you miss it when starting out a new blog.

    Keep up the great job,

    Anthony

  18. Josh Garcia says:

    Linus,

I like how you stated, “What’s your purpose”.

Blogging is fun, but ultimately bottom line is to convert readers into leads and monetize. I’m in business for profit and not running a non-profit organization. That is powerful information regarding the opt-in at the end of your post and what to say.

    Thanks for the info…

    Josh

  19. Cristian says:

    hey Linus!

In my opinion, generating traffic is the first order in business. I mean you’re absolutely right – conversion is what makes the business progres, but without constantly exposing your blog to unique visitors, even the best conversion rates aren’t enough.

First Have them read your stuff and they’ll enrole. if you prove your value.

Nice commenting on your blog again!

    Cheers,
    Cristian

  20. Bill says:

    Hey Linus,
    Excellent post…again.

Many people do in fact lose their focus when they are trying to gain a “position” regardless of where they are posting. Blogs are a great reference since that is the “flavor of the day” but it also applies to Google rankings, Twitter, Facebook, etc., etc.

You have shown the “correct” way to get someones attention and many will benefit from your great post.

    To Your Continued Success,
    Bill

  21. Linus Ruzicka says:

    Anthony,

    thanks for commenting.

That sucks to hear about your account getting hacked. What happened exactly?

Glad I could send you a reminder about monetizing your posts.

btw – sweet looking blog yourself. You blog often?

    ~ Linus

  22. Linus Ruzicka says:

    Josh,

LOL…great comment. You’re “in it [business] for profit and not running a non-profit organization.”

It’s jsut the matter of building that content and that traffic so that people will see you and like what you have to say, trust you, and then they are reminded about that fact that you are there to help them not only with content, but with being a mentor or strategist as well.

    ~ Linus

  23. Linus Ruzicka says:

    Cristian,

    Thanks for the comment.

And yes, you are correct as well. You need to get the traffic first.

    It should look like this:
    1. Advertising
    2. Traffic
    3. Leads
    4. New team members into your system
    5. Team members into your Primary business

And the WHOLE time, building a relationship with them!

    ~ Linus

  24. Linus Ruzicka says:

    Palte,

Well, only time will tell ;)

But as you know, without traffic, you have no leads – period. SO I am not belittleing that. I jsut want to emphasize don’t focus solely on traffic, but that fact that you want to convert that traffic into leads as well.

the way I posted at the bottom is my most effective way that i have found in doing that.

    ~ Linus

  26. Bob Howard says:

You are so right, we are network marketers not blogger but it is easy to get caught up in your blog. Alexa scores and such are just a measure for you traffic to your blog but the real measure is how much month shows up in your bank each month. If you are are not building relationships and build your primary business then maybe it is time for you to rethink your priorities and what you spend your time on.

    Good food for thought here.

    Bob

  27. Linus Ruzicka says:

    Bob,

It is SOOOO easy to get caught up in it all and in the end you lose out on your overall goals – which like you said is your relationship with your leads and your team. #1 overall priority!

    God Bless You,

    Linus
