Nine Keyword Tools At Your Fingertips – All For Free

When I first started out with PPC keyword research, I had NO IDEA where to turn for my keyword research (which as you know is VITAL to you PPC campaigns).

I could pay for some of the more popular keyword tools out there (Word Tracker, Google Cash Detective, SEO Book.com, etc), but I was on a budget and frankly, I hadn’t budgeted for keyword tools.  So I was left looking for inexpensive alternatives.

Some I was well aware of, others I had no clue existed until I received an article from Mike Dillard talking about inexpensive keyword tools.

Since it was enlightening for me to hear of these tools and I had not seen or heard of them myself, I’m passing them along to you here today.

But before I get into the tools, I want to mention something first.  It’s not necessarily the keyword tools themselves, but it’s how you use the tools that really make all of the difference in your keyword research.  In some cases you need to get creative.  But the thing to keep in mind is that at the beginning, if you’re willing to do just an ounce more of work than your competition, you will be further along than they are in the long run.

So lets get started:

1. Google Search.

I’m talking about just the normal routine Google search at http://www.google.com

When you type in any word or phrase in the Google search bar, you’re going to find related phrases in a little drop down window from the search bar.  So if you were searching for a phrase like “MLM” you’d see related keywords like:
•    MLM companies
•    MLM leads
•    MLM watchdog
•    MLM scams
•    MLM software
•    MLM lead system pro
•    MLM business

These are all keywords that potential network marketing buyers will be looking for, and therefore you should try bidding on.

(view my example listed below…)

2.  Google Adwords Keyword Toolhttps://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordTool

& Google Adwords Search-based Keyword Toolhttp://www.google.com/sktool/#

These are the two that I use – both within Google Adwords.  I heavily recommend signing up for a Google Adwords account just for these two tools.  You don’t even need to use Adwords for PPC campaigns, just for the tools themselves which can be used in SEO campaigns, tags, etc.

The Keyword Tool allows you to do 2 things:
A.  Research by entering a keyword (ex. network marketing) and it will churn out details on that specific keyword as well as related keywords.  It also breaks down the research into
•    Advisor competition – which other competitors are using the same keyword.
•    Local Search Volume for the month – search volume for that keyword in the month your currently in and inside your country.
•    Global Search volume for the month – seardch volume for that keyword in the month your currently in for everything OUTSIDE of your country.

B.  Website content research.  Enter a site (ex. http://magneticsponsoring.com) and it will break the number of keywords down into different categories, and tell you what those keywords are.

The Search-based Keyword Tool:
The main difference between the Search-based Keyword Tool and the Keyword Tool is that the Search-based keyword tool generates keyword ideas based on your WEBSITE, and identifies those currently not being used in your AdWords account. Both tools, however, offer the option of browsing all keywords across all categories.

3.  Google Alerts http://www.google.com/alerts

One more Google tool to use – Google alerts.  You can set Google Alerts up to send you e-mail notifications whenever news, blog entries, websites, or companies are created on the internet.

As these new sites are launched, they tend to get a lot of attention – therefore spiking an notification to Google, and Google Alerts will send you a message.

Now, since the products (and therefore the keywords) are new, that means very few advertisers.  The names havn’t yet hit the keyword tools yet, but yet the key here is that there is a lot of buzz in the social networks on these products and the traffic to these sites is high.  If you have keywords with these products, you get the traffic without the competition.

4.  Keyword Mixershttp://www.keywordmixer.com

These programs allow you to enter 2 or more lists of words, and then have them mixed into new combinations.

For example, I took one list:
•    mlm
•    network marketing
•    home based business
•    work at home

And combined it with another:
•    online
•    leads
•    mentors

And it created 12 new combos:
•    mlm online
•    mlm leads
•    mlm mentors
•    network marketing online
•    etc.

Imagine if you had a list with more words or more lists.  Depending on the number of your lists and the number of words in each list, you could very easily get confused.

5.  Typo Generatorshttp://tools.seobook.com/spelling/keywords-typos.cgi

Typo generators are devious because they allow you to make less competitive versions of already high volume keywords.  When you start bidding on the mistakes of other people, you have a very good chance to be positioned first and or the only ad they see.

6.  Keyword “Brainstorms”http://www.kwbrowse.com/
& http://JimYaghi.com/?p=355

These 2 online programs allow you to to an online brain storm of keyword ideas.  The words that are generated share a theme with the keyword that you enter.  For example, enter in “internet marketing” at KWBrowse.com and this is what is shown to you:

7.  Wikipediahttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page
Now you’re probably trying to figure out how Wikipedia relates to keyword research – well, here’s how.

Say you’re doing keyword research on Monavie.  To reach their distributors, you can use Wikipedia to get the names of all of their distributed products and bid on those keywords.

8. Alexahttp://www.alexa.com

Alexa is a site that gives you a ton of information on any domain name or website that you enter into the search bar.

You can use Alexa in this manner – after you perform a search, you click on the “get site info” link which takes you to the details for that website.  Select “Related” links.  This will tell you all of the popular sites that you’re marketing to.

Many of these websites are often times errors in typing, so collect the sites that are errors and save them into your database, Excel file, etc.

Now you can bid on these “error” site key word names and direct them to your sites before your competitors do.

9.  Amazonhttp://www.amazon.com

There are two reasons you should be using Amazon in your keyword research.  You can look at a list of books that people starting a home based business would be looking at if they wanted to start a home based business and bid on those titles as keywords.

The second reason is that when you go to a particular book that a home business owner is looking at, there is a section called “Customers who bought this also bought…”  These are book titles that you should also be bidding on.

So, there you have it.  The 9 Free Keyword tools that I use to make my keyword research more beneficial and productive for my online campaigns.

If you have more questions, be sure to drop me a message.

Good luck with YOUR keyword research,

Linus Ruzicka
